DRIVING THE CONVERSATION AROUND CHANNEL 4'S BOAT RACE DEBUT.

THE BRIEF.

Soapbox was appointed by Channel 4 in the build-up to the 2026 Boat Race, supporting the broadcaster as it prepared to bring the iconic event to free-to-air television as part of a new five-year rights deal.

Our brief spanned the announcement of the landmark rights deal, providing a platform for Channel 4’s Head of Sport, Pete Andrews, to articulate the significance of the partnership and Channel 4’s wider strategy around securing major sporting rights, through to supporting Channel 4 talent and invited media on the ground on race day.

STRATEGY.

We developed an earned media strategy built around three core pillars of activity, designed to maximise awareness of Channel 4’s new role as the free-to-air home of The Boat Race, generate broad national conversation and ultimately drive audiences towards the broadcaster’s coverage.

We kicked off the campaign by securing an exclusive first interview with Pete Andrews in City A.M., announcing the new five-year rights deal and positioning the move as a significant moment for Channel 4. The announcement generated widespread national coverage, with the new deal receiving blanket exposure across the national press.

We then built momentum around the start of the new Boat Race season, securing one-to-one interview opportunities with Pete Andrews at The President’s Challenge, the historic event marking the official beginning of the new season.

A key focus was also introducing audiences to Channel 4’s newly assembled broadcast team ahead of its first Boat Race coverage. We secured widespread national and broadcast trade coverage profiling the on-screen line-up, including Clare Balding as lead presenter, Jamie Laing as co-host and Ade Adepitan as studio host.

EXECUTION.

Alongside the key announcements and talent profiling, we worked with Channel 4 and 3Gem to create a bespoke survey exploring national sentiment towards The Boat Race and its place in British sporting culture. The findings generated a hero piece of coverage in SportBible, providing a fresh, data-led hook to broaden the conversation around the event.

We organised for Ade Adepitan to attend The Boat Race press conference at London Rowing Club, alongside a programme of remote interview opportunities in the week leading up to the event. These included interviews with The i, The Athletic and Sporting News, helping to build anticipation for Channel 4’s inaugural broadcast.

The press conference also provided an important platform for Channel 4’s senior leadership to shape the narrative in the final days before the race. Pete Andrews, Channel 4’s Head of Sport, and Phil Sibson, Managing Director of Media Production, joined the panel, with their comments and insight helping to frame the significance of Channel 4’s arrival as the new free-to-air home of The Boat Race. Quotes from both spokespeople were subsequently used across press coverage, ensuring Channel 4’s key messages and ambitions were embedded in the national conversation on the eve of race day.

On race day, we extended the media strategy beyond traditional press coverage, arranging for Daily Mail Sport TikTok and The Sportess to attend and capture exclusive behind-the-scenes content.

We also facilitated unrivalled access to the Channel 4 studio, giving media an inside look at the production operation and showing audiences exactly what goes on behind the scenes to bring one of the world’s most iconic sporting events to screen.
